RTS ROAMEO cellular DECT-based wireless intercom systems have streamlined communications as part of an extensive intercom system upgrade at Louisiana State University’s Athletics Department.
“We produce a lot of sports content for the SEC Network,” says Larry Allen, Broadcast Engineer at LSU. “Some is live on-air broadcast, some goes to streaming channels, plus we work with video board operation and marketing and promotion people within the arenas. We have five central control rooms connected to the various sports venues across the campus using the new Dante and OMNEO network from RTS, and all the intercom data, wired and wireless, rides on that network.
We have nearly 50 RTS keypanels in the control rooms, which we assign based on where people are and who they need to talk to. For wireless intercoms, we bought 31 ROAMEOs, which are distributed among all the sports venues we serve. At each event, there may be 5 to 10 people that need to be on comms, and multiple venues may have events at the same time. This time of year, we’ve got football, volleyball, and soccer going on. The system handles all that with ease.
Before this, we had a 2-channel party-line system for wireless intercom, which gave us a lot of problems with crosstalk and interference. ROAMEO gave us virtually unlimited channels, and now I can do point-to-point routing to the people on the intercom channels.
The switch to RTS ROAMEO has made everything more efficient, especially when things get busy. I can assign some people covering, say soccer, to go over to the basketball arena to do a show, and when they arrive, their ROAMEOs work there as well. And that is a beautiful thing.”
