CBS and RTS support NYC’s High School for Environmental Studies with ODIN digital intercom matrix

Burnsville, MN (November 2018) Located in a former movie studio in New York City’s West Midtown neighborhood, the High School for Environmental Studies (HSES) is focused on urban environmental education. As part of its innovative, hands-on approach, the school is creating an Environmental Studio, a modern media production and broadcast facility. Partnering with CBS Broadcasting, which is a sponsor of HSES, RTS has donated an ODIN digital intercom matrix to the project.

The next-generation of RTS intercom matrices, ODIN, provides an unprecedented combination of flexibility, scalability and full-IP performance in its single-rack-unit form factor, with easy system expansion as needs require – up to eight units can be interconnected for a total of 1024 ports. ODIN offers the broadest interoperability with future, current and legacy RTS products; has built-in OMNEO IP technology enabling high-quality Dante audio; and allows seamless connectivity between analog two-wire, four-wire and digital devices.

“The idea is to use the media arts to give students experience in producing environmental content that is relevant from the classroom to the community,” notes Maximilian Sugiura, HSES Assistant Principal of Technology and Instructional Support. “Eventually, students will be producing and broadcasting a weekly environmental news program. ODIN will provide our students with relevant, real-world skills in creating professional productions.”

With CBS Broadcast Center’s Audio Supervisor Charlie Jones handling the audio aspect of the project, RTS saw the HSES Environmental Studio as a worthy education project. To complement the ODIN system, CBS has donated several legacy RTS KP32 keypanels and two analog BTR-800 wireless intercoms, integrated by Chris O’Connell and Justin Milner of CBS. The result is a four-channel comm system that seamlessly bridges analog partyline and IP-based digital intercom technologies. ODIN’s ease of use and powerful scalability make it an ideal choice for a new or growing educational facility.

The Telex RadioCom TR-800 is a Two-channel UHF frequency-agile wireless beltpack for use with the BTR-800. Individual volume controls also allow for easy level adjustment. The TR-800 has an all metal cast magnesium case, an LCD based graphical user interface, stage announce activation, wireless talk around (ISO) activation, enhanced ClearScan, detachable antennas and an auto-sensing headset connector that automatically switches between electret and dynamic headset mics.
